Biographical notes: Son of Peleg Mitchell and Lydia Cartwright Mitchell. Married Lydia Coleman in 1812. William and Lydia were the parents of ten children. Cashier at Pacific Bank from 1836 to 1861. This position included attached living quarters. He installed an observatory on the roof. Performed star observations for the U.S. Coast Survey. His daughter Maria helped with the measurements. Overseer of the Harvard College Observatory, Member of many scientific societies, contributed astronomical articles to the”American Journal of Science.” He died at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY at the age of seventy-seven.
