Biographical notes: In a whaling career that spanned the years 1832 to 1865, he captained the vessels Milton, Gideon Howland, Columbia, Citizen and Islander. In 1865, he returned on the Islander with the jaw of a huge sperm whale taken in the Arctic. This 18-foot jaw, which showman P.T. Barnum tried unsuccessfully to purchase, is on exhibit in the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Husband of Azubah Bearse (Handy) Cash.
